Dahlias love summer, bravely blossoming into big, colorful flowers at the hottest time of year. And they always steal the spotlight. “You have to let the dahlias stand on their own,” says Houston floral designer Rebekah Johnson, “without too many other flowers in the mix.” Of course, the weight of the blossom often causes the flower to fall forward, “so I usually tuck in one other flower to support them,” she says.In this case, she used Lenten roses, which typically bloom in the spring, to lend support and complementary texture. She also gave the vase special attention by affixing 2 1/4-inch satin ribbon and then tying a creeping fig vine around it, creating a natural-looking container.RESOURCES: Rebekah Johnson of Bergner & Johnson Design, www.bergnerandjohnson.com.
